My name is Sharon Rousselin, and I am one of the Coordinators for the Support for Carers programs, at the Southern Migrant & Refugee Centre, in Dandenong. We support and work with people living in the City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey, Cities of Monash and Kingston, as well as the Cardinia Shire.
We work with “hidden carers”, care givers who look after a loved one (and sometimes more than one person). While this is a duty/ expectation, it also comes with challenges. We support people for whom it can get overwhelming at times. We work with people from various culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. We understand the challenges faced by carers and support them by providing information, counselling, and respite (free of charge).
Many of our carers look after a care recipient who is currently waiting to get a home care package from My Aged Care. This process can be long and overwhelming. So, in the meantime, we can provide home care and personal care as well as accompanied shopping for 3 months (free of charge), until the package is allocated to the person. We also have monthly carers meetings and outings; where carers meet with other carers and go on outings. We work with mothers with young and adult children with intellectual, physical disabilities and mental illnesses. We also support spouses who look after their wife/husband with Dementia or other medical conditions and siblings looking after their siblings. We also support grand children who look after their grandparent/s. We work together with our clients and tailor support based on their needs, as everyone has unique challenges and experiences.
We are hosting an Expo on Wednesday the 21/08 from 10.00 to 1.30pm and we would love to extend the invitation to your listeners. It is a free event, and a light lunch will be provided. There will be different service providers present (Services Australia), My Aged Care, NDIS, Better Place Australia and more). People will be able to ask questions and know what support is available for them. Please come!
